If Only They Had Called PMP: Suffolk County Car Wash Pays Stiff Wage & Hour Penalty

HR Update Newsletter Heading

On May 22, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced that he had secured a guilty plea from the owner of a Suffolk County car wash who failed to pay at least 10 workers the state-mandated minimum wage and required overtime wages.

Schneiderman’s investigation revealed that the business owner paid at least 10 car wash employees hourly rates of as little as $4, and failed to pay overtime wages for most employees. The NYS minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and New York requires a rate of time and a half for more than 40 hours per week.

For his failure to comply with NYS Wage & Hour regulations, the business owner will pay $75,000 in restitution for unpaid wages, and his business will submit to two years of monitoring of its employment practices by Schneiderman’s office.
